The problem is, most people don’t know when everyday aches cross the line to something that needs specialist care. And most often than not, they don’t know who to turn to.
To help, we spent weeks researching and speaking with patients to identify the top spine specialists in El Paso. Below are the ones that stood out during our search!

El Paso Spine Center caught our eye immediately because of its heavy focus on robotic and minimally invasive treatments. They lean into the idea that a spine surgeon in El Paso should help patients heal with as little collateral damage as possible.
We love that they use tiny incisions and imaging devices to see what they are doing without cutting through much muscle. As a result, their surgeons can reach the spine from the side of the body and avoid major nerves.
They have the expertise to perform different surgeries for cervical, thoracic, and lumbar issues. They offer options like artificial discs and tumor resection.
Patients we spoke with heavily praised the doctors’ bedside manner, describing them as warm and sympathetic.
The downside is that their focus on advanced procedures means they don’t offer as many non-surgical options as other spine specialists in El Paso.

El Paso Orthopedic Spine Institute is a true back pain specialist in El Paso. What’s great about them is that they offer conservative options like spinal injections and chiropractic care alongside high-level surgery.
They treat everything from simple back pain to serious spinal cord compression. They even have an orthopedic spine specialist who can perform a microdiscectomy, a surgical procedure to remove a small piece of bone or disc to relieve nerve pain.
We love that their team uses surgical approaches specific to the curve’s location. This makes it easy for the surgeons to reach the spine.
The specialists also explain the procedures clearly, which helps reduce the patients’ nerves.
We also think it’s great that they can pivot from physical therapy to a complex cervical disc replacement if the situation changes.
The only downside is their waiting room. It can get very crowded during the day. Some patients have reported waiting half an hour

“We are truly blessed to have the Orthopedic and Spine Institute in El Paso, Texas. Dr. Lovato performed a 360-degree spinal fusion. My husband had muscle spasms and severe leg pain before his surgery. His surgery was successful and he is active and pain free.
Dr. John Dunn has also joined the Spine Institute and is a hand, wrist & nerve surgeon. A year later our granddaughter had a severe wrist fracture from a soccer injury. We were told Dr. John Dunn was the best pediatric hand surgeon in the area. He performed the surgery and her wrist has normal function. We were very pleased with her recovery.
Two other doctors have joined the practice, a shoulder specialist (Dr. John Scanaliato) and pain management (Adlei Carlson). We have visited with the shoulder specialist and were impressed with the quality of care he provided.
Don’t be discouraged if you make an appointment with Dr. Lovato and the office has you visit with his nurse practitioner, Santiago Esquivel before getting an appt with Dr. Lovato. Santiago is a remarkable
NP and will schedule you with Dr. Lovato if it’s an urgent matter.
This group of doctors are young and very knowledgeable on surgical techniques typically found in bigger cities and Central Texas region. El Pasoans are truly blessed to have them in our city.”

What’s even better is that the clinic is equipped with the latest technology. This gives us the confidence that he was receiving the best possible care.
We also love how warm and comfortable the clinic is, unlike the typical cold atmosphere you get from other spine clinics in El Paso. It helps take the edge off for those worried about a big diagnosis.
However, because Dr. Rahman is a high-level specialist, it can be hard to book an appointment quickly.

“I had surgery a few weeks ago at the Houston Scoliosis and Spine Institue and it was performed by Dr. Ra’kerri Rahman. He did an amazing job. I had a minimally invasive surgery on my spine. Not only have I healed very well, but he went thru a tattoo that I had done for my mother after she passed away and he had to make two incisions thru it. Spine & Rehab Specialists is a premier non-surgical spine treatment provider in El Paso that uses unique treatments to build spinal strength and prevent future issues.
We think their use of Functional Dry Needling (FDN) is fascinating. It involves using thin needles to turn off painful trigger points deep in the muscle that fingers just can’t reach.
It seems highly effective too. Several patients we spoke with shared that their spinal pain lessened significantly just after a few sessions.
Spine & Rehab’s aquatic therapy is equally impressive. They have a HydroWorx 500 pool that helps improve mobility by supporting patients’ bodies, allowing them to build strength without impact.
They also have an AlterG Anti-Gravity treadmill, which uses air pressure to make people feel weightless. This allows them to walk or run without hurting themselves during recovery from surgery.
That said, their focus on rehab means they don’t perform spine surgery. We heard from a patient with severe scoliosis who loved their care but had to be referred to another provider for the surgical treatment they eventually needed.

“It was my second time coming back to this facility for therapy services and I could simply express that I am happy and grateful for the guidance and support given to me since the start. Anthony is a really knowledgeable and professional PT with great work ethic. He is a great listener and explains clearly anything I might have a question about. Patients we spoke with really appreciated how the staff took the time to explain how their spine pain was linked to their overall neurological health.
They are especially known for their Epidural Steroid Injections (ESI). This is a neck pain treatment El Paso residents often choose when they want to avoid surgery but need relief from a herniated disc.
The specialists inject medicine right into the epidural space near the spinal nerves to calm down inflammation.
A patient we spoke to told us the combination of epidural steroid injections and therapy helped reduce his pain, and the inflammation in his back went down significantly.
The only real issue we found is that their customer service lags in updates. A patient we spoke to said it took her a few days to receive a call from their office confirming her follow-up appointment.
